Identification of molecular genetic changes that lead to development of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis

The two chronic inflammatory bowel diseases Crohn’s disease (MIM 266600) and ulcerative colitis (MIM 191390) are commonly known as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and their etiology is unknown. IBD is a multifactorial disorder and eight different chromosome regions have been suggested to harbour putative susceptibility loci for one or both of these IBD forms. So far, only one of these susceptibility genes, NOD2 on chromosome 16, has been identified. The aim of my project is to enhance our knowledge of the molecular genetic changes that result in IBD. This will be performed using spotted DNA microarrays to screen a number of candidate genes in IBD patient material for changes in their expression. Selected genes with changed expression patterns will be further investigated using additional techniques.
